this is a vintage Italian chain, which are often plated with rhodium or a similar white metal. this one was plated with a greyish metal, which is wearing off inconsistently. You could opt to have it re-plated, but it cannot be polished off because the coated metal is stronger than the soft sterling silver it's covering — price reflects this inconsistent surface
